Chapter 11

“ARE YOU SATISFIED, Sir Maximilian?”

“More than satisfied.” I placed the large basket, loaded with all the essences I had agreed to transfer to the Temple of Skron, on the table.

“The Temple of Skron is interested in items from sets. We are ready to provide you with additional recipes and all the necessary ingredients.”

“Not right now. First, I must undergo training with Magister Meram,” I was still lying fully prostrate. The information transfer had been rough this time. Four held my head for about five minutes, no less. I think I even lost consciousness a couple of times.

“The Temple of Skron is willing to wait. Collaboration with us is profitable. And we are ready to prove it.”

“Profitable,” I agreed, evaluating my updated status bar. Before, new pictograms would simply appear in the next slot over, but now it had been completely redesigned. Everything was more organic, sleeker and clearer. Everything in its place. There were new icons, a new quick access panel, new abilities and, what interested me most, a function for working with pupils. The beastman had accomplished the main goal — he had turned me into a mentor. Someone who could give others a status bar.

Then the dark beast left, allowing me to once again evaluate the results of our meeting. I didn’t even know where to start. The Temple of Skron had approached its second proposal with special care, taking into account almost all of my desires, as well as adding some of its own.

First of all, as already mentioned, I was now a mentor who could bestow a status bar on one person a month. Moreover, if I didn’t use the opportunity, it would roll over and accumulate for future use. Anyone I “converted” in this way will be registered with me as a student and will be displayed in a separate panel. Until they gave up their apprenticeship, I would be able to track all their progress.

An updated magic field. Now it looked entirely different, but it came with two incredible perks. First, I was able to adjust my magic stones. The tool that the Fortress was so adamantly against turned out to be a completely accessible tool that did not require any additional mechanisms. One nice element was that in order to get this function, all I had to do was drink three exclusive elixirs. The Temple of Skron stated that they wouldn’t reveal the recipe for the elixirs, because it was a trade secret (and I wasn’t giving away how I obtained the essences), but the ingredients were exorbitantly expensive and exceedingly rare. Consequently, very few dark ones could afford such a thing. Only the highest hierarchs of the clans of Skron, and even then not all of them. The second perk was that the size of my magic field had increased to six cells in each direction. Elixirs helped with this process as well, but the Temple servant immediately warned me that another increase wouldn’t be accessible to me for the next ten years.
